The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
