New Year's Celebrants Urged to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Predicted Throughout the UK
Meteorologists have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Continue Amid Warnings
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the weather service.
Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, so extra layers vital, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Even More

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Warnings Released
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this signified the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
