Arctic Blast Envelops Canada as United States Experiences Hottest Christmas on Record.
An intense cold spell has seized an intense and prolonged cold spell, with temperatures hovering between -20C and -40C for weeks. This week, the Yukon community of Braeburn saw the mercury drop to -55.7C, representing its most frigid December day in half a century.
Prolonged Freeze Below -40C
In addition, the locales of Mayo and Dawson suffered through sixteen nights in a row below -40C, with the temperature in Mayo bottoming out at -50.4 degrees Celsius earlier this week. Whitehorse similarly reported a series of ten nights when the cold dipped under -30 Celsius.
The bitter chill extended its reach south through Christmas week. In Edmonton, the Christmas overnight low dipped under -28 degrees Celsius.
The day after Christmas was forecast to deliver readings no higher than -20 Celsius across many regions, from Edmonton in the west to Quebec in the east.
Likely to Linger Through Early January
This harsh winter weather is expected to continue into the new year. Officials have warned that the Yukon could face electricity outages soon, as the system endures record-high pressure from record-high energy demand.
The prolonged chill has been caused by the Arctic vortex settling across the northern part of the continent this month, allowing bitter Arctic air to spill south. Next week, the cold air mass is expected to retreat north allowing more temperate air from the Pacific to sweep across the United States and penetrate southern Canadian regions.
Stark Contrast Compared to Stateside Temperatures
Conversely, sections of America recorded historically high temperatures for Christmas as readings skyrocketed 15 to 30 degrees Celsius above normal. In many areas, conditions felt more typical of April or May rather than the end of December.
Multiple states established new Christmas temperature highs. In Oklahoma, Oklahoma City hit 25C on Tuesday, exceeding the old record of 22C from 1982. Metropolitan areas such as Austin, Dallas, and Charlotte similarly saw thermometers rise past the 25C mark.
Heat-Dome Effect Drives the Heat
Warmer-than-normal conditions are forecast to last through Boxing Day and the days ahead, with unseasonable heat forecast to sweep through the American Southeast soon.
This heat is being driven by a robust atmospheric ridge reaching from the arid southwest across the continent, which generates a heat-dome phenomenon. This setup creates an extensive zone of high atmospheric pressure over a large portion of North America, effectively capping warm air at lower altitudes. Sinking atmospheric air undergoes compression and additional heating, allowing unusually warm temperatures to build.
