American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports said flights would be delayed due to a lack of workers - among the peak after the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in history.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On that day, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as other flights stretching north to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice went out at 08:45 in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were back on schedule before noon.

Travel at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airport in the country, could encounter problems from low staffing later in the day.

The FAA warned travelers in the state to check with airlines about updated departure times.

The situation comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in LA on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest periods to fly in the United States.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted several flight controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as president, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
